The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg dominated the Australian GP. The German won by a Sebastian Vettel Margin of 26.77 Seconds from the McLaren of rookie driver Kevin Magnussen. Team mate Jenson Button recovered from a poor grid position to finish on the podium in Australia yet again. However it wasn’t all plain sailing in Button’s drive as he was stuck behind the train lead by Nico Hulkenberg, whom was struggling with front left graining on his option (soft) tyres. Button also profited from the undercut for his 3rd stint (Prime – Medium tyres). The safety car was deployed on lap 12 after the Williams of Valteri Bottas hit the wall on lap 10. It was a mature drive from the Fin as he eventually finished 5th making it his best ever F1 Finish. The 5th place for Bottas also gave Williams more points than there total from last year. Torro Rosso youngster Daniil Kvyat scored points on his F1 debut making him the holder of the youngest person to score a point in F1. Another rookie to score on his debut was Dane Kevin Magnussen who also emulated Lewis Hamilton with a debut podium for McLaren; he was also the 1st Dane to ever stand on the F1 podium. However on the 6 year anniversary of his win at Albert Park, Lewis Hamilton retired on lap 3 after he lost a cylinder and he had to save his power unit, which will most likely be an ongoing thing this season. Also World Champion Sebastian Vettel had the same problem leading to his retirement a lap later. Felipe Massa was disappointed to not make the 1st corner after Kamui Kobayashi’s brake by wire system failed causing him to plough into the back of the Brazilian. It was a poor show by Lotus as both cars got a DNF, but Sauber also showed there incredibly poor pace after they hardly featured in the event. But it was Red Bull and Daniel Ricciardo who stole the headlines as he became the first Aussie to stand on his home podium, until he was disqualified because his car was using more fuel than allowed and Red Bull refused to reduce the flow when informed by the F.I.A., Red Bull have appealed saying that the F.I.A. fuel flow meters had shown "inconsistencies" throughout the event. But Mercedes showed their dominance but fragile reliability as they cruised to yet another victory.
