Nico Rosberg squeezed his 3rd pole of 2014 and his 7th career pole by the tightest of margins in Montreal. It had been Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton who had the upper hand throughout the weekend but a lockup at the end of Q3 ended the Brits charge. There had been a debate weather one of the two Mercs would start the race on the prime soft compound tyre, but that story disappeared before it arrived. It was a great performance from Sebastian Vettel and the two Williams who start 3, 4 and 5th on the grid. Ferrari once again struggled as Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen where at the back end of the top 10. There were more struggles for Marcus Ericsson and Pastor Maldonado as the Caterham driver crashed at the end of Q1 just after Pastor Maldonado pulled over with a suspected engine issue. It was a very bad day for Esterban Gutierrez who crashed in FP3 meaning he took no part in qualifying. Also the two Force India's failed to make it out of Q2 with Sergio Perez spinning late on. But with overtaking being quite easy and with good race pace Force India and Williams could challenge for a podium. For Nico Rosberg pole isn't everything in Canada meaning a charging Lewis Hamilton will mean another great Canadian GP. The race is live on Sky F1 and BBC 1 at 19:00 UK time.
