Felipe Massa took his first pole since 2008 as he stormed to an extremely popular pole in Austria. the Brazilian ceased pole from team mate Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes faltered in Spielberg. It was a controlled lap from Massa put a controlled lap together to show that his pace hasn't gone just yet after 4 weak seasons at Ferrari. It was a poor day for the 2 Mercs, as they didn't seem to have the pace on the Supersoft tyres. Championship leader Nico Rosberg was slow on his 1st timed run whereas Hamilton had over steer causing him to exceed the track limits thus disallowing his time. The F.I.A. had been very strict by saying any car to exceed the track limits will have the time disallowed regardless of any advantaged gained or not. But this wasn't Mercedes only worry as on the final runs Hamilton snatched a rear brake causing a spin in T2 which bought out yellow flags ruining Rosberg's quali. That left Hamilton down in 9th without setting a time. Valtteri Bottas had provisional pole but a mistake on his final run left him in P2 with his best ever start in F1. It was a mixed day at Red Bull. Daniel Ricciardo managed a decent Q3 lap but World Champion Sebastian Vettel could only manage 13th compounding his 2014 woes. He was joined by Jenson Button who managed 12th whereas rookie and team mate Kevin Magnussen got a solid Q3 appearance. Torro Rosso looked strong with their increased straight line speed. Both Louts' struggled as they failed to get out of Q2 but Sauber's horrifying season continued with both cars out in Q1. Nico Hulkenberg broke his Q3 duct but failed to set a time because he exceeded track limits. But Williams locked out the front row for the first time since Germany 2003 but can they stay there? Is it damage limitation for Lewis? Watch the action live on Sky F1 at 13:00 UK time BBC highlights in the evening.
